The Czech power grid in 2011 was repeatedly and “more
frequently” overloaded with unscheduled flows of electricity
caused by renewable energy from Germany, jeopardizing the
security of the network, grid operator CEPS said. The most
critical situation occurred in the period between Nov. 25 and
Dec. 16 when unscheduled power flows amounted to 3,500
megawatts while the usual value is about 1,000 megawatts, the
Czech operator said in a statement today on its website. The
near-emergency situation in the network was mainly caused by
excessive power output from German wind farms on windy days.
The shutdown of German nuclear plants, the rise of installed
capacity in photovoltaic power plants in Germany and intensive
power trading on spot markets also played a part in the
network overloads, CEPS (PCZPBL01) said. CEPS has implemented
measures to identify and predict such situations and said the
risk of the recurrence of such situations in the future still
persists and the transmission networks in the region must be
reinforced as quickly as possible, it said. The country may
have to install transformers at the borders to protect the
grid at a cost of 2 billion koruna ($99 million), CEPS chief
Vladimir Tosovsky told reporters at a press conference in
Prague today, newswire CTK reported. CEPS already plans to
invest 3.5 billion koruna in the network in 2012, the newswire
reported.

grounding electrode system of the second building. If the two
buildings are electrically connected via a conductive path,
such as the shielding of a coax cable or water pipe, this
would provide an alternate path for neutral current to flow
during normal operation (like resistors in parallel). Is this
a trivial concern? Do you know of any problems that can arise
from such a situation such as GFI relays in the main service?
All those whom I have discussed this with have dismissed it as
trivial. They site residential houses connected via a common

Although the National Electrical Code doesn’t require a
specific color code for ungrounded conductors, electricians
often use the following color system for power and lighting
conductor identification: • 120/240V, single-phase wiring —
black, red and white • 120/208V, three-phase wiring — black,
red, blue and white • 120/240V, three-phase wiring — black,
orange, blue and white • 277/480V, three-phase wiring — brown,
orange, yellow and gray; or, brown, purple, yellow and gray On
the grounded side for neutrals, the wires have to be white or
gray. Buc prefers white at 120/240 (208) and gray for 277/480
circuits. Green or bare wire is always the grounding
conductor. Personally, Buc specifies the latter 277/480 color
grouping; that removes the “orange” wire color and any
confusion. Why? Orange is the only specified ungrounded
conductor and marks the “wild leg” of a 120/240 center-tapped
neutral delta configuration. For those unfamiliar: In wild leg
configuration, the two end phases on the center-tapped winding
provide 120 volts to neutral, but on the wild leg you will
find nearly 208 volts to the neutral. If you see an orange
wire in a panel, alarm bells of caution should go off in your
head. You don’t want to wire a 120 VAC outlet across the wild
208 volt phase.

The objective of this study was to collect data on and
analyze the performance of presently manufactured air
conditioners operating at high ambient temperatures. The
design parameters that affect power draw under these
conditions were investigated. Four modified air conditioner
designs capable of reducing peak draw by at least 500 watts
were created and tested with a computer simulation. Major air
conditioner manufacturers were contacted regarding the
proposed modifications. The manufacturers indicated that in
principal it was possible to build units that meet the design
criteria. By providing a better understanding of air
conditioner performance on peak, this study will help PG&E
ensure the effectiveness of residential air conditioner peak
load reduction programs. This study found that SEER rating is
not an accurate predictor of peak kW or kVA.

world as we know it. That’s what the U.S. wind power industry
is saying to itself these days. And they aren’t talking about
some Mayan doomsday nonsense. On Jan. 1 the federal production
tax credit on wind investments expires. For the past 20 years
the credit has offset about 30% of the cost of building wind
turbines. Add to that the “renewable portfolio standards” for
green energy mandated by 29 states, and as a result we’ve seen
wind farms spring up across the country. Since 2007 nearly 40%
of all the new electricity capacity built in this country has
been wind. Wind now generates roughly 3.5% of U.S.
electricity. Don’t expect wind’s share to climb beyond that
level any time soon. The end of the tax credit could very well
mean the end of the wind industry. According to the federal
Energy Information Administration, the “levelized cost” of new
wind power (including capital and operating costs) is 8.2
cents per kWh. Advanced clean-coal plants cost about 11 cents
per kWh, the same as nuclear. But advanced natural gas-burning
plants come in at just 6.3 cents per kWh. But it could be
getting a lot worse for wind. A fascinating new report by
George Taylor and Tom Tanton at the American Tradition
Institute called “The Hidden Costs of Wind Electricity”
asserts that the cost of wind power is significantly
understated by the EIA’s numbers. In fact, says Taylor,
generating electricity from wind costs triple what it does
from natural gas.%

http://www.webcitation.org/5u1abZrFW // The term "Ufer"
grounding is named after a consultant working for the US Army
during World War II. The technique Mr. Ufer came up with was
necessary because the site needing grounding had no
underground water table and little rainfall. The desert site
was a series of bomb storage vaults in the area of Flagstaff,
Arizona. The principle of the Ufer ground is simple, it is
very effective and inexpensive to install during new
construction. The Ufer ground takes advantage of concrete’s
properties to good advantage. Concrete absorbs moisture
quickly and looses moisture very slowly. The mineral
properties of concrete (lime and others) and their inherent pH
means concrete has a supply of ions to conduct current. The
soil around concrete becomes "doped" by the concrete, as a
result, the pH of the soil rises and reduces what would
normally be 1000 ohm meter soil conditions (hard to get a good
ground). The moisture present, (concrete gives up moisture
very slowly), in combination with the "doped" soil, make a
good conductor for electrical energy or lightning currents.
Ufer techniques are used in building footers, concrete floors,
radio and television towers, tower guy wire anchors, light
poles, etc. Copper wire does not function well as a "Ufer"
ground due to the pH factor of concrete (+7pH is common). The
use of steel reinforcement as a "Ufer" ground works well and
concrete does not chip or flake as has been found with copper.
The use of copper wire tied to the reinforcement rods outside
the concrete shows none of these problems.
Over the past few months, the Government of Liberia (GOL)
has expressed the desired to get the Mount Coffee Hydro up and
running. I have read and heard about it requiring over two
hundred million United States dollars to achieve. The strategy
one uses in designing a system determines its cost. If GOL
wants to make good on this huge task of national interest, I
recommend a Liberian with many years of experience working to
keep a hydro operating right here in Liberia and he is in
charge of ensuring that Firestone Liberia meets its power
supply. The individual is Patrick Brown. With our government
full support, Patrick can restore our hydro. GOL should
negotiate with Firestone Liberia and lure him. He has what it
takes to do the job. Patrick manages a team of Liberians
operating and maintaining Firestone Liberia hydro. This
brother worked for LEC for many years at Mount Coffee. He
knows the facility well. I believe GOL should use him and give
him all the support to address the problems at our hydro.

Y-Y connected transformers, excepting three-phase core-type
units, are not capable of supplying an appreciable
single-phase load from line to neutral without a serious shift
in the position of the neutral, owing to the fact that the
corresponding primary currents of such loads, flowing through
the primaries of the unloaded phases, magnetize them. This
statement is primarily true for Y-Y connected single-phase
units and shell-type three-phase units. Core-type units,
however, may, on account of the interlinking of the magnetic
fluxes in the three legs, give tolerably good results under
conditions of single-phase loads from line to neutral or
unbalanced electrostatic charging currents. // The wye-wye- is
used under the same condition and to supply the same mixed
distribution loads as the delta-wye connection. The division
of load between transformers is also similar to t hat of the
delta-wye. CARE SHOULD BE EXERCISED IN MAKING THE WYE-WYE
CONNECTION TO MAKE SURE THAT A WIRE CONNECTS PRIMARY BANK AND
PRIMARY CIRCUIT NEUTRALS. iF NOT, TWO PRIMARY WINDINGS WILL BE
IN SERIES BETWEEN EACH TWO PHASE WIRES. Current into a
transformer from its phase wire can return only through the
other two phase since there is no neutral return. Thus , the
wye-wye without connected primary bank and primary source
neutrals can operate satisfactorily only when the load is
EXACTLY balanced between each phase and neutral on the
secondary with equal phase to neutral voltages. Only then will
the vector sum of the phase currents add up to zero at the
neutral point so that the return current equal zero.

TSTM (Two Sockets – Two Meters, Inc.) is dedicated to
improving metering function, installation, cost and safety
across the electricity industry. Our initial products were
designed to allow metering all poly- and single-phase
installations using only two – and sometimes one – 9S meter.
However, with this efficiency came increased reliability,
safety and ease of installation. These important benefits have
eclipsed our initial technical advances.
Dr. Beckman's energy book is still the most concise
comparison of health hazards across multiple electrical
generating technologies of which I am aware. He makes clear
that no technique for generating electricity is absolutely
safe. Each has its risks. However some are much more dangerous
to human safety and health than others. His energy book
carefully makes comparisons and shows that our failure to use
nuclear as the primary heat source for electrical power
generation has sentenced many people to premature death.
Nuclear power generation using U.S. technology is not only
safer in some aspects, but in all significant aspects. //
Since Dr. Beckman's book was published it has been shown that
coal plants release enough uranium and thorium in their stack
gases and scrubber sludge to power a nuclear power plant
larger than the coal powered plant. One of the few significant
hazards of nuclear power is the release of radioactivity. Most
coal plants release too much radioactivity to operate if they
were regulated by the NRC. U.S. background radiation is about
250 millirems per year (some locations in other countries have
levels 20 times higher). To this, nuclear power plants add
about 0.003 millirems. Living within 50 miles of a nuclear
power plant adds about 1/100 as much radiation as 1 old color
TV. Grand Central station in NY could not be licensed as a
nuclear reactor even without any fuel because its granite
blocks emit too much radiation. // In 1973 calculations show
that a small change in radiation levels at nuclear plants
would cost 800 million per saved life. The NRC mandated the
change. A similar calculation showed that

Stanley Consultants was selected by the Liberia Electricity
Corporation (LEC) as the design engineer for the new Mount
Coffee 64 MW hydropower project on the St. Paul River in
Liberia, West Africa. Upon completion, it was named the Walter
F. Walker Hydro Dam and contained four vertical hydroelectric
generating units, 3 earth-filled dam sections, 10 flood
control gates, and a 69 kV substation and transmission line.
This facility became the country's largest source of
electricity. This facility operated successfully until 1990
when the National Patriotic Front of Liberia took control of
the project site during the First Liberian Civil War and did
not permit LEC to open the tainter gates during high water
events. Eventually, the earth-filled dam was overtopped and
destroyed. Since then, the powerhouse has been vandalized,
looted and all mechanical and electrical systems have been
destroyed, leaving only the concrete substructure,
superstructure and steel penstocks. In 2007, Stanley
Consultants was again retained by LEC to determine the
feasibility of restoring the facility and to research the
project's potential environmental and socioeconomic benefits.
A damage assessment study and field observations were
performed on the dam in the areas of civil, geotechnical,
hydro-mechanical, and electrical engineering. After the
investigations, a comprehensive report outlined rehabilitation
requirements and the engineering work required to restore the
plant. In addition%2
When two “isolated” grounding systems are horizontally
separated by only 10 ft of earth, they are not electrically
insulated from each other. This medium-to-high impedance can
lead to a possibly harmful potential difference between the
grounding systems and the distribution system’s neutral and
grounding conductors. In B.T.’s example, there are two
grounding connections of the system’s grounded conductor
(neutral): one at the transformer and the other at the
building’s service disconnect. Each is connected to its
respective ground electrode. However, a reduced amount of
objectionable current will still flow across the earth gap,
separating the two grounding systems. Small voltages thus
generated are more than enough to create possible destructive
interference on digital control and communications networks
and computer-operated devices. Preventing this requires one
connection between the power system’s grounded conductor and
just one of the grounding systems, with both grounding systems
then directly connecting together. This is permitted by Sec.
250-21 of the NEC. —F.M.P.

provided conceptual design and feasibility study to redevelop
hydroelectric power and construct an upstream storage
reservoir. Located on the St. Paul River, Mt. Coffee formerly
generated 64 MW of power. Originally designed by Stanley
Consultants, and constructed in the 1960s, it was Liberia’s
largest source of electricity and vital in their plans for
reconstruction and restoring commercial productivity. The
project consists of a 3-km-long, earth-filled dam that diverts
water to the intake structure. Penstocks then deliver the
water to the powerhouse containing four vertical Kaplan units.
The water is then returned to the river by a tailrace canal.
The earth-filled dam was breached when LEC personnel were not
allowed to raise the ten tainter gates that regulate the
reservoir’s level. Left unraised during the rainy season, the
gates caused water to eventually crest the earth-filled dam,
creating a wide breach. As a result, the reservoir was drained
and the intake is currently above the water. Water now
bypasses the powerhouse, leaving the turbines dry. Subsequent
vandalism and looting removed virtually all of the mechanical,
electrical, and control systems from the powerhouse. The LEC
retained Stanley Consultants to prepare an updated feasibility
study for the redevelopment of hydropower at Mt. Coffee via
funding from the United States Trade & Development Agency.
The study included conceptual designs, cost estimates, energy
generation analysis, environmental review, and comprehensive
financial and economic analyses. Stanley Consultants has since

For several weeks, I've been looking for a USB-based power
meter or UPS power supply that could monitor the AC power
consumption connected to a desktop power supply. Ideally, I've
been looking for such a solution that costs less than $100
USD. This mission has now been accomplished with coming across
the Watts Up Power Meter Pro, per a reader recommendation. The
"Watts up? PRO" has a USB interface, provides an integrated
LCD for also monitoring the power consumption and other data
that can be toggled via two buttons, and accepts any US power
connection. This power meter also supports logging the power
data to the device itself and various other options from their
software. The company only makes Windows software, but from
their support page they reference a community-created
open-source utility. For a little more than 1,000 lines of C
code is this open-source utility that works under Linux with
the "Watts Up" brand power adapters. It supports dumping
various power metrics over USB, including the real-time
Wattage. The cost of the Watts Up Pro is $130 USD from the
manufacturer web-page but can be found for as little as $110
from other Internet web-stores. I decided to buy one of these
units after seeing the features, open-source Linux support
(albeit spawned by the community), and the acceptable price.
For decades, experts have agreed that solid oxide fuel cells
(SOFCs) hold the greatest potential of any fuel cell
technology. With low cost ceramic materials, and extremely
high electrical efficiencies, SOFCs can deliver attractive
economics without relying on CHP. But until now, there were
significant technical challenges inhibiting the
commercialization of this promising new technology. SOFCs
operate at extremely high temperature (typically above
800°C). This high temperature gives them extremely high
electrical efficiencies, and fuel flexibility, both of which
contribute to better economics, but it also creates
engineering challenges. Bloom has solved these engineering
challenges. With breakthroughs in materials science, and
revolutionary new design, Bloom's SOFC technology is a cost

We really need to define the Smart Grid not in what it might
offer interest groups, or why it's a "good idea," but in how
it will empower consumers to save energy and money, encourage
innovation in technology and markets, and create a stable
atmosphere for investment and productive competition. What
would that look like? For starters, a consumer-focused grid
would make cooperation between utilities and their customers
part of the contract.
For years, people have talked about the electricity
consumption of data centers. Some people want to believe,
somehow, that Googling is energy intensive. But it's not.
Thanks to Koomey's Corollary to Moore's Law, computation has
been getting more energy efficient: The number of computations
per kilowatt-hour of electricity usage has been doubling every
1.5 years for decades. Relative to our society's other
technological processes -- heating homes or growing corn or
ground transportation -- computing's energy usage was and is a
drop in the bucket. All of Google, all its servers and
campuses and everything, require about 260 megawatts of
electricity on a continuous basis, as of 2011. The US has
about 1,000 gigawatts of capacity, or 1,000,000 megawatts. So,
to put it mildly, I am sanguine about the electrical
consumption of our computing infrastructure. But, according to
a new report from the University of Melbourne's Centre for
Energy Efficient Telecommunications, the wireless networks
that let our devices tap into those data centers might turn
out to be another story. In a new whitepaper, the CEET
estimates that when we use wireless devices to access cloud
services, 90 percent of the electrical consumption of that
system is eaten up by the network's infrastructure, not the
servers or phones.. The data centers themselves use one-tenth
that amount of electricity. Worse, cloud services accessed
wirelessly will continue to explode, leading to a ballooning
electrical load as well. By 2015, they estimate this system
could eat up between 32 and 43 million megawatt hours. In
2012, the figure was only 9 million megawatt hours.
For years BMW has been using the same plug and socket format
that the Powerlet product uses. Similiar to the "cigarette
lighter" for autos, the Powerlet connector allows you to
access the battery without disassembling the bike. This form
factor is quickly becoming the industry standard powersport
connector.
The next generation of nuclear reactors is on its way, and
supporters say they will be safer, cheaper and more efficient
than current plants. Here's a look at what's coming -- and
when.

Finance Minister Amara Konneh Thursday (Jan 24) disclosed in
Monrovia that the Government of Liberia and the European
Investment Bank have completed the signing of a loan deal
worth US$65 million to finance the Mount Coffee Hydro. Liberia
is expected to pay back the money in 20 years at the interest
rate of 1.4 percent, meaning the country will have to pay
about US$73 million. Liberia only three years ago graduated
from a mammoth debt burden of at least US$5 billion, an amount
the country would never pay back in generations. Konneh said
the loan will enable government starts the renovation process
of the Mount Coffee Hydro which was destroyed more than 20
years ago as result of the Liberian civil war. The hydro
powered the capital and its environs, but was systematically
looted during the war years. According to Konneh, a total of
US$200 million is needed to complete the renovation work on
the Hydro. In the same vein, he said Germany and Norway will
give to Liberia in grant the amount of US$35 million and US$75
million respectively as support to rebuild the Hydro, while
Liberia will make an annual contribution of US$15 million
towards the project. Konneh noted that the Hydro, when
rebuilt, will produce about 80 megawatt of electricity,
something he said will be bigger than 20 [64] megawatts it
produced prior to its destruction. // The Mount Coffee Hydro
is expected to be completed in three years. It is also
expected by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf that the hydro
will be officially turned on December 20, 2015.

the Government of the Republic of Liberia in the interest of
national reconstruction and development, issued 'Executive
Order No. 51' granting 100% customs duty waiver on all fuel
and lubricants for the use of the Liberia Electricity
Corporation (LEC), the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS), the
National Transit Authority (NTA), schools, clinics and
hospitals that are deemed by the Ministry of Finance to be
inadequately covered by Government's budgetary appropriations
or subsidies. // The electricity grid of LEC, which had a
total installed capacity of 191 megawatts (MW) of power by
1989, currently generates only 22.6 MW of diesel power, of
which about 16 MW are effectively available. Less than 1% of
the population has access to public electricity (11000
customers as of August 2012). This should be compared with
approximately 13% in 1989 (35000 customers). Given the
extremely high cost associated with diesel production
particularly due to high imported fuel cost, the generation
cost of LEC has been estimated at US $0.32/kWh compared with
average generation costs in Africa of US $0.18/kWh (Ref. World
Bank, 2011; EU, 2012). Consequently, Liberia has one of the
highest public electricity tariffs in the world despite
Government's subsidies ($0.52/kWh as of October 2012).

The Government of Liberia and the European Investment Bank
or EIB Thursday sealed a loan deal worth EURO 50 million
(US$65m) as part of a financing arrangement for the Mount
Coffee Hydro Power Plant rehabilitation. The loan comes with a
high concessional interest rate of 1.42%, amounting to US8m
payable over the period of 20 years with 4-years grace period.
Government has put the total financing cost of the project to
EUR186, 200,000 (US$242 million). Of this amount Government is
providing US$47.1 million, while its European partners are
contributing EUR150 (US195 million). Norway and Germany have
already committed their support comprising the grant component
of EUR75 million (US$97.5 Million) and EUR25 million (US$32.5
million) respectively.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Association coal
has been consistently cheaper than natural gas. Coal was $1.22
per MMBtu (1 MMBtu = 293 kWh) in 1999 and $2.27 per MMBtu in
2010, whereas natural gas was $2.57 per MMBtu in 1999 and
$5.09 per MMBtu in 2010. The Institute for Energy Research has
produced a report which projects the levelized cost of energy
production using different fuels, including natural gas
technologies, coal, and wind in 2017. While the levelized
costs for coal and some natural gas technologies are projected
to be similar in cost and capacity, wind and off-shore wind
provide a fraction of the capacity at a much larger levelized
cost. // levelized costs chart
This superb book shows the extreme folly of relying on wind
power for reliable electricity supply. In November 2008, the
Minister for Energy and Climate Change said that gas-fired and
coal-fired electricity cost £50 per megawatt hour (MWh)
to generate and nuclear power cost £38. By contrast,
offshore wind cost £92, onshore wind £72. To keep
the uneconomic option of wind power alive, the government has
made us all pay huge hidden subsidies, through our electricity
bills, to wind power companies. As the 2003 Energy White Paper
admitted, "We have ... introduced a Renewables Obligation for
England and Wales in April 2002. This will incentivize
generators to supply progressively higher levels of renewable
energy over time. The cost is met through higher prices to
consumers. ... By 2010, it is estimated that this support and
Climate Change Levy exemption will be worth around £1
billion a year to the UK renewables industry." Yet by 2007,
Britain's 2,400 wind turbines generated just 1.3 per cent of
our electricity, and even this paltry supply was not reliable.
The 2008 House of Lords Select Committee on The Economics of
Renewable Energy said, "To make up for its intermittency ...
back-up conventional plant will be essential to guarantee
supply when required, to compensate for wind's very low
capacity credit. Wind generation should be viewed largely as
additional capacity to that which will need to be provided, in
any event, by more reliable means; and the evidence suggests
that its full costs, although declining over time, remain
significantly higher than those of conventional or nuclear
generation." %0
f a proposal by the National Electric Reliability
Corporation (NERC) is approved, the vibrating reed meter may
be making a comeback. While utility companies have prided
themselves on maintaining accuracy, NERC is proposing a
year-long experiment to allow the frequency to drift, and see
if any problems result. It says the upside of looser
tolerances would be a more reliable grid and reduced operating
costs to the utilities. At the heart of the matter is a Time
Error Correction (TEC). As the line frequency drifts, the
electric companies intentionally create an “error” in the
opposite direction. But here’s where it gets complicated.
Since most electric power producers are also connected to
other electric power producers, they all have to make a TEC at
the same time. Thus, everyone agrees to NOT try to achieve the
normal goal of sixty cycles per second. Instead, they all
generate a little more or a little less than the load demanded
by their customers to correct the time error. The NERC
estimates that with the proposed changes, fluctuations might
be greater on the East Coast, with clocks running up to 20
minutes fast. On the West Coast, they would only gain about 8
minutes.

Russian “Sayano-Shushenskoe” (yep it’s hard to read name)
hydro electric power plant is the biggest hydro power plant in
Russia, and the biggest (in terms of production) electric
generating unit in Russia. It’s power output exceeds 6400
Megawatts and is in the Guinness records book. Now, today
messages started arriving about a huge explosion on the site.
Later, those were confirmed by some official media though
according to the witnesses they underestimate the damage. Here
we have the fresh shots from the territory surrounded by
emergency services. They tell that eleven people died and
fifty-six are missing. The signs of panic appeared among
locals from the surrounding villages and towns. They fear that
in case of further damage the dam could let the water freely
go thus meaning that thousand of houses would be flooded.
This meter is monitoring the power balance of the UK
electricity grid. If the needle is too far to the left, it
means more generation is needed to meet demand. The meter
actually shows the grid's "frequency", which is related to the
speed of rotation of generators all over the country. When
there is too little power available, the whole grid "slows
down" and the needle moves to the left. Why is this important?
It is important because it is possible to measure this signal
from any power outlet in the country. This means that it is
possible to design electrical appliances that know the current
imbalance on the grid. This is what dynamic demand control is
about. The device to measure grid frequency is very simple.
Here at Dynamic Demand, we built (at very little cost) a
device that continuously monitors the frequency on the
electricity grid and updates this website with real-time data.
Dynamic demand appliances would react to this very same
signal. When the needle is to the left, they would be more
likely to switch off, reducing the load on the grid and
helping to restore the balance. When the needle is to the
right, they would be more likely switch on, using up the
excess power. Millions of such devices acting together would
act like a huge, fast-reacting back-up system.

208 volt phase.

houses (such as Advanced Circuits, BatchPCB, PCB123, Gold

to do. Creating a PCB is not an easy task and there are many
ways for a fab house to mess it up. Unfortunately, fab houses
tend to spend less time on prototypes than on production runs.
Therefore, we try to design products and PCBs for
'manufacturability'. This tutorial will show you how to
minimize the number of ways the fab house can screw up a PCB.
We've messed up piles of PCBs over the years. We want to share
with you some of the DFM (design for manufacture) rules and
tricks and tips we've learned to get a good PCB, every time.
If you're creating a prototype PCB, we highly recommend you
use these rules to increase the chances that your proto will
work!

The Bob-clock is a wall-clock which uses 60 multi-colored
LEDs arranged in a circle to represent the small and big arm
of an analog clock. If desired, it can also display the
seconds with a third color. The image above shows the
Bob-clock (v2.0 hardware, but v2.1 looks the same).

If you service RF amplifier modules as used in most of
today’s solid-state AM and FM transmitters, you will come to
know that sometimes a MOSFET doesn’t blow up when it fails.
Over time, Frank began to recognize that the “gate” junction
of a MOSFET could become “leaky” — still working but with
degraded performance. However, a “leaky” gate can be tricky to
diagnose. Some repairs are akin to “throwing the baby out with
the bathwater” in that some individuals will simply replace
all of the MOSFETs. Good (and expensive) MOSFETs end up being
thrown away. Frank doesn’t like using this “shotgun approach”
when doing repairs, given the cost of several hundred dollars
each. It’s also a personal thing for him to not waste. Frank’s
simple project will give you a method to verify the “usable”
performance of the RF MOSFET in question. Fig. 4: Brads and
buss wire serve as solder points for the components. You
likely have all of the parts somewhere in your shop. If you
don’t, a visit to your parts store will produce everything
you’ll need for around $10 or so. Construction can be simple.
Frank used a small block of plywood and some 1-1/2-inch brass
brads as the solder points, as shown in Fig. 2. The resistor
values are on the schematic in Fig. 3.
eightCubed - an assembly of 512 full color light emitting
diodes. Each voxel is addressable by multiplexing the lattice,
making sophisticated animations an enjoyable scene on the
8x8x8 LED display. The cube's main function is to be visually
pleasing. The eightCubed does this by showing geometric shapes
in the form of animations; each animation has 60 frames per
second. The animation videos in v1.0 are streamed to the
controller via USB by use of a PC application.
Wandering the halls of Wikipedia, I came across this
jaw-droppingly complex example of a perfboarding project
(stripboard, to be precise). The unit was built as a prototype
Dolby SR noise reduction circuit and was photographed by Mr.
Gregory Maxwell at the San Francisco Airport Museum's History
of Audio exhibition. A few pics from the 2006 exhibit can be
found over at Stereophile.
Objective: -I needed an input device that could provide some
additional buttons for my Carputer. -I needed an volume &
menu control knob, using common keys did not give me the
linear, fast control I needed. -(on-screen volume slider on
touch sensitive display was not good enough, because it
consumed display space.) -I wanted a circuit that could notify
my computer about low battery voltage, and hibernate it in
time. -I wanted a circuit that could detect when stopped the
engine, so the computer could offer to hibernate automaticly.
-I hoped to avoid the need of own USB driver, so it had to be
HID compliant device.

Open-USB-IO makes it very easy and very cheap to control
hardware from your computer. You can also program the ATMEGA32
microprocessor to do anything you want. The Open-USB-IO board
will plug into the USB port on a Linux, Mac or Windows
computer ( Vista or XP) and provide a variety of digital and
analogue inputs and outputs including 7 motor drivers, RS-232,
an LDR, Pulse Width Modulators, and more. No special software
drivers are required just a simple command line or GUI
program. The board is ideal for controlling real hardware from
a USB port and for programming at the level of command line or
script, C++ on the PC, or C and assembler on the ATMEGA32
microprocessor that is the heart of the board. See
www.pjradcliffe.wordpress.com for more details, an excellent
reference manual, required programs and more.
I’ve been making double-sided printed circuit boards in my
home workshop for quite some time now. This page is an attempt
to document the processes I usually follow and experiences
I’ve obtained making PCBs. The common methods of making PCBs
at home (e.g. using toner transfer) have been quite well
documented throughout the net. My intention here is not to
provide a tutorial covering the basics. Instead, I briefly
cover my own setup and processes from start to finish and
share some of my own experiences as well as elaborate on some
usually overlooked topics such as vias and soldermasks.

MOST retailers would recoil in horror at the thought of
keeping unsold products on their shelves for 30 years. Not
Halted Specialties Company. It’s willing to hold on to a few

Our goal for this project was to build an OBD-II compliant
device that would communicate with any OBD-II enabled car and
read back real time data as well as perform basic performance
testing and diagnostics.
http://www.webcitation.org/6AbsnxtS1 /// In a major press
conference over the weekend, Liberia’s Solicitor General
Counselor Watkins Wright said government engaged the ELWA
management sometimes ago to purchase 14.5 acres of the one
hundred and thirty five acres of land to build thirteen
ministries. He said the Liberian government told the ELWA
management that the 14.5 acres will be purchased at the
prevailing rate, but the ELWA management failed to accept the
offer. The Liberia Solicitor General noted that as a
“responsible and civilized government” it decided to go to
Court,to peacefully and lawfully resolve the issue, but
according to him, ELWA remains adamant, intransigent and
un-cooperative, but based on interventions and appeals from
institutions and individuals, the Liberian government decided
to withdraw the case and pursue other options.
